Spinning a region

Take a flat region, such as the area under y=xy = \sqrt{x} from x=0x = 0 to x=4x = 4, and spin it all the way around the xx-axis. It sweeps out a solid shaped like a horn. A solid made this way is called a solid of revolution, and the line it spins around is the axis of rotation.

Now slice that solid perpendicular to the axis. Every slice is a circle filled in: a disc. That is the key fact. You already know how to find a volume from slices, VV=∫abA(x)dx= \int_a^b A(x)\,dx, and you know the area of a disc, πr2\pi r^2. All that is left is to find the radius.

Left: the region under y = √x from x = 0 to 4, shaded, with one thin vertical rectangle whose height is √x. Right: the solid made by revolving the region about the x-axis, a rounded horn drawn in 3D with the x-axis through its center. The rectangle sweeps out one thin disc, highlighted in blue, with radius r = √x. Below: V = the integral from 0 to 4 of π(√x)² dx = 8π.
Figure 1. The rectangle at xx reaches from the xx-axis up to x\sqrt{x}. Spun around the axis, it sweeps out a disc of radius x\sqrt{x}. LevlPrep original diagram.

The radius is a distance from the axis

Picture one thin vertical rectangle in the region, standing on the axis and reaching up to the curve. When the region spins, that rectangle sweeps out a thin disc. The disc's radius is the rectangle's height: the distance from the axis to the curve. About the xx-axis, that is just f(x)f(x). So

V=∫abπr(x)2dx=π∫abf(x)2dx.V = \int_a^b \pi\, r(x)^2\,dx = \pi\int_a^b f(x)^2\,dx.

This is the disc method. It works whenever the region touches the axis all along its length, so that every slice is solid all the way to the center.

Worked example. The region under y=xy = \sqrt{x} for 0≤x≤40 \le x \le 4 is revolved about the xx-axis. Find the volume.

Radius. From the axis up to the curve: r(x)=xr(x) = \sqrt{x}.

Disc area. πr2=π(x)2=πx\pi r^2 = \pi(\sqrt{x})^2 = \pi x.

Volume. VV=π∫04xdx= \pi\int_0^4 x\,dx=π⋅x22|04= \pi \cdot \frac{x^2}{2}\Big|_0^4=8π= 8\pi.

About the yy-axis

When the axis of rotation is the yy-axis, the slices perpendicular to it are horizontal. Each one sits at a height yy, has thickness Δy\Delta y, and reaches from the yy-axis out to the curve. So the radius is a horizontal distance, the curve's xx-value written in terms of yy, and the integral is in dydy:

V=π∫cdr(y)2dy.V = \pi\int_c^d r(y)^2\,dy.

Worked example. The region bounded by y=x2y = x^2, y=4y = 4 and the yy-axis is revolved about the yy-axis. Find the volume.

Slices. Horizontal, from y=0y = 0 up to y=4y = 4.

Radius. At height yy the region reaches from x=0x = 0 to the curve. Solve y=x2y = x^2 for xx: r(y)=yr(y) = \sqrt{y}.

Volume. VV=π∫04(y)2dy= \pi\int_0^4 (\sqrt{y})^2\,dy=π∫04ydy= \pi\int_0^4 y\,dy=8π= 8\pi.

Writing π∫02x4dx\pi\int_0^2 x^4\,dx instead would spin a different region (the one under the parabola) about a different axis.

Where points are lost

  • Missing π\pi. Every disc has area πr2\pi r^2. Write the π\pi in your setup, not just in your answer.
  • Radius not squared. π∫rdx\pi\int r\,dx adds up lengths, not areas.
  • Squaring term by term. (4+sin⁡x)2\left(4 + \sin x\right)^2=16= 16+8sin⁡x+ 8\sin x+sin2⁡x+ \sin^2 x, not 16+sin2⁡x16 + \sin^2 x. On a calculator, type the whole radius in parentheses and square it.
  • Wrong variable about the yy-axis. Horizontal discs need rr in terms of yy and limits in yy.

With a calculator, write the setup first, for example π∫012(4+sin⁡(x2))2dx\pi\int_0^{12} \left(4 + \sin\left(\frac{x}{2}\right)\right)^2\,dx, then evaluate it in radian mode and report three decimal places with units of volume.
