Part 1 · Hook

Why this matters

A differential equation such as dydx=x+y\frac{dy}{dx} = x + y hands you a slope at every point of the plane, even before you know any solution. Draw a short dash with that slope at many points and a picture appears: a slope field. It shows the shape of every solution at once, the way iron filings show a magnet's field.

Part 2 · Before you start

What this builds on

Part 3 · Prerequisite check

Quick check before you start

1. At a point where dydx=−2\frac{dy}{dx} = -2, the tangent line to the graph

  1. falls 2 units for each unit to the right
  2. rises 2 units for each unit to the right
  3. is horizontal
  4. falls 1 unit for each 2 units to the right
Show the answer

The derivative is the slope of the tangent line: rise over run is -2.

  • Correct: falls 2 units for each unit to the right:
  • rises 2 units for each unit to the right:
  • is horizontal:
  • falls 1 unit for each 2 units to the right:

2. Which function satisfies dydx=2x\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x?

  1. y=x2+4y = x^2 + 4
  2. y=2x2y = 2x^2
  3. y=2y = 2
  4. y=x2+xy = x^2 + x
Show the answer

The derivative of x2+4x^2 + 4 is 2x2x.

  • Correct: y=x2+4y = x^2 + 4:
  • y=2x2y = 2x^2:
  • y=2y = 2:
  • y=x2+xy = x^2 + x:

Part 4 · See it

See it first

Short segments at the 25 integer points with x and y from −2 to 2. Each segment has slope x + y: slope 0 along the line y = −x, steep positive slopes up to 4 at (2, 2), and steep negative slopes down to −4 at (−2, −2). The nine points with x and y from −1 to 1 are labeled with their slopes.
The slope field of dydx=x+y\frac{dy}{dx} = x + y at the integer points. Each segment's slope is x+yx + y; the nine boxed points show the values. LevlPrep original diagram.

Part 5 · Step by step

How it works, step by step

  1. A differential equation gives dydx\frac{dy}{dx} in terms of xx and yyeach point of the plane gets a slope
  2. Substitute the coordinates of a pointyou get the number the segment through that point must have as its slope
  3. Draw a short segment with that slope, centered on the pointpositive slopes rise to the right, negative ones fall, zero is flat
  4. Repeat at every grid pointthe field shows how every solution curve bends

Part 6 · Key ideas

Key ideas

  • At each point, compute dydx\frac{dy}{dx} and draw a short segment with that slope, centered on the point.
  • Slope 0 gives a horizontal segment; a slope that is undefined (division by 0) gives a vertical one.
  • If dydx\frac{dy}{dx} depends only on xx, segments in each vertical column are parallel. If it depends only on yy, segments in each horizontal row are parallel.
  • Find where the slope is 0 first: those lines organize the whole field.
  • Make steep slopes look steep and gentle ones gentle; the sign matters most.

Part 7 · Misconception

A common mistake

The wrong idea: At the point (0,2)(0, 2), use x=2x = 2 and y=0y = 0.

What actually happens: A point is written (x,y)(x, y): (0,2)(0, 2) means x=0x = 0, y=2y = 2. For dydx=2x−y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x - y the slope there is 2(0)−2=−22(0) - 2 = -2, not 44.

Graph

A slope field

−2−112−2−112xy

1. Which differential equation has this slope field?

  1. dydx=2x−y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x - y
  2. dydx=2x+y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x + y
  3. dydx=y−2x\frac{dy}{dx} = y - 2x
  4. dydx=x−2y\frac{dy}{dx} = x - 2y
Show the answer

Test easy points: at (0,1)(0, 1) the segment falls with slope −1-1, at (1,0)(1, 0) it rises with slope 2. Only 2x−y2x - y gives both.

  • Correct: dydx=2x−y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x - y: It gives slope −1-1 at (0,1)(0, 1) and 22 at (1,0)(1, 0), as drawn, and 0 along y=2xy = 2x.
  • dydx=2x+y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x + y: At (0,1)(0, 1) this gives slope +1+1, but the segment there falls.
  • dydx=y−2x\frac{dy}{dx} = y - 2x: At (1,0)(1, 0) this gives −2-2, but the segment there rises steeply.
  • dydx=x−2y\frac{dy}{dx} = x - 2y: At (1,0)(1, 0) this gives 1, but the drawn slope is steeper; its zero line is y=x2y = \frac{x}{2}, not y=2xy = 2x.

2. The field is drawn for dydx=2x−y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x - y. Find the slope of the segment at (1,3)(1, 3).

No calculator. Type the exact value (a fraction, π, e or a root is fine).

Show the answer

dydx=2(1)−3=−1\frac{dy}{dx} = 2(1) - 3 = -1.

  • Answer: -1

3. For dydx=2x−y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x - y, where are the segments of the slope field horizontal?

  1. Along the line y=x2y = \frac{x}{2}
  2. Along the yy-axis
  3. Along the line y=2xy = 2x
  4. Along the xx-axis
Show the answer

Horizontal means slope 0: 2x−y=02x - y = 0 on the line y=2xy = 2x.

  • Along the line y=x2y = \frac{x}{2}: On y=x2y = \frac{x}{2}, 2x−y=3x22x - y = \frac{3x}{2}, which is 0 at the origin alone.
  • Along the yy-axis: At (0,1)(0, 1) the slope is −1-1.
  • Correct: Along the line y=2xy = 2x: Slope 0 means 2x−y=02x - y = 0, so y=2xy = 2x.
  • Along the xx-axis: At (1,0)(1, 0) the slope is 2.

4. The slope field of dydx=cos⁡x\frac{dy}{dx} = \cos x has which feature?

  1. The segments in each horizontal row are parallel.
  2. The segments share one slope everywhere.
  3. The segments are horizontal on the x-axis.
  4. The segments in each vertical column are parallel.
Show the answer

When dydx\frac{dy}{dx} depends on xx alone, moving up or down a column does not change the slope.

  • The segments in each horizontal row are parallel.: Along a row xx changes, so cos⁡x\cos x changes.
  • The segments share one slope everywhere.: cos⁡x\cos x varies from −1-1 to 11.
  • The segments are horizontal on the x-axis.: On the xx-axis the slope is cos⁡x\cos x, 0 at x=π2x = \frac{\pi}{2} but 1 at x=0x = 0.
  • Correct: The segments in each vertical column are parallel.: The slope depends on xx alone, so it is the same for every yy in a column.

5. Which statements about the slope field of dydx=xy\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{x}{y} are true? Select all that apply.

  1. Segments are vertical at points on the xx-axis with x≠0x \ne 0.
  2. Segments are horizontal at points on the yy-axis with y≠0y \ne 0.
  3. Slopes are positive at points with x<0x < 0 and y>0y > 0.
  4. The slope at (2,4)(2, 4) is 2.
Show the answer

Zero numerator gives slope 0; zero denominator gives an undefined, vertical slope.

  • Correct: Segments are vertical at points on the xx-axis with x≠0x \ne 0.: There y=0y = 0 and the slope x0\frac{x}{0} is undefined.
  • Correct: Segments are horizontal at points on the yy-axis with y≠0y \ne 0.: There the slope is 0y=0\frac{0}{y} = 0.
  • Slopes are positive at points with x<0x < 0 and y>0y > 0.: A negative over a positive is negative.
  • The slope at (2,4)(2, 4) is 2.: 24=12\frac{2}{4} = \frac{1}{2}; the fraction was flipped.

6. For dydx=x−y2\frac{dy}{dx} = x - y^2, a student draws a segment rising with slope 3 at (1,2)(1, 2). What is wrong?

  1. The slope there is 1−2=−11 - 2 = -1, so the segment should fall gently.
  2. The slope there is 1−4=−31 - 4 = -3, so the segment should fall.
  3. Nothing: 1+2=31 + 2 = 3.
  4. The slope there is 2−1=12 - 1 = 1.
Show the answer

At (1,2)(1, 2): 1−22=−31 - 2^2 = -3. The student added instead of subtracting y2y^2.

  • The slope there is 1−2=−11 - 2 = -1, so the segment should fall gently.: yy is squared: 22=42^2 = 4.
  • Correct: The slope there is 1−4=−31 - 4 = -3, so the segment should fall.: x−y2=1−22=−3x - y^2 = 1 - 2^2 = -3.
  • Nothing: 1+2=31 + 2 = 3.: The equation subtracts y2y^2; it does not add yy.
  • The slope there is 2−1=12 - 1 = 1.: The coordinates were swapped and yy was not squared.
