Unit 4 · Topic 4.11
The Inverse and Determinant of a Matrix
For a 2×2 matrix the determinant ad − bc is the signed area of the parallelogram made by its columns.
Practice 1: Procedural and Symbolic Fluency
Beyond the exam. The AP® Precalculus exam does not test this unit. Many classes teach it, and it prepares you for calculus.
Part 1 · Hook
Why this matters
A secret message is scrambled by multiplying blocks of numbers by a
matrix. To read it, you need the matrix that undoes the scrambling. One number, the
determinant, tells you whether such an undo matrix exists, and it also measures how much the matrix stretches areas.

Part 5 · Step by step
How it works, step by step
- For , compute →the determinant
- Draw the two columns of as vectors from the origin→they make a parallelogram whose area is
- → has an inverse: swap and , negate and , divide by
- →the columns lie on one line, the parallelogram is flat, and has no inverse
Part 6 · Key ideas
Key ideas
- The determinant of is . Its absolute value is the area of the parallelogram made by the two columns.
- The inverse matrix satisfies . For : .
- means no inverse: two different inputs give the same product, so nothing can undo .
- If and has an inverse, then .
Part 7 · Misconception
A common mistake
The wrong idea: The inverse of is .
What actually happens: Reciprocals of the entries do not undo matrix multiplication. Swap and , change the signs of and , and divide by ; then check that .

1. What is ?
No calculator. Type the exact value (a fraction, π, e or a root is fine).
Show the answer
.
2. Which matrix has no inverse?
- , since
- , since
- Both, since neither is the identity
- Neither, since no entry is zero
Show the answer
, so has no inverse. , so does.
- Correct: , since : Determinant : no inverse.
- , since : A nonzero determinant means is invertible.
- Both, since neither is the identity: A matrix need not be to have an inverse; it needs a nonzero determinant.
- Neither, since no entry is zero: Nonzero entries do not guarantee an inverse; .
3. What is ?
Show the answer
Swap the diagonal, negate the others, divide by : .
- Correct: : times the swapped-and-negated matrix.
- : Divide by the determinant, .
- : Reciprocals of the entries do not undo matrix multiplication.
- : Change the signs of the off-diagonal entries.
4. Solve .
Show the answer

- Correct: : , .
- : This is the right side; multiply it by .
- : Use ; dividing by entries of does not solve the system.
- : , not .
5. Write as an expression in .
Type an expression.
Show the answer
.
6. What is the inverse of ?
Show the answer
. Swap and , negate and , divide by .
- Correct: : Swap the diagonal, negate the rest, divide by .
- : Swap the diagonal entries and .
- : Every sign is flipped: this is times the inverse. Swap and but keep their signs.
- : Change the signs of and .
Part 9 · Summary

For a
matrix the determinant
is the signed area of the parallelogram made by its columns. If it is not
, the inverse is
, which undoes the matrix and solves
