Homework survey of high school seniors

Three years ago, a state survey found that 40% of the state's high school seniors did at least one hour of homework on a typical school night. Education officials believe this proportion has gone down. This year they selected a random sample of 600 of the state's 120,000 seniors; 213 of them said they do at least one hour of homework on a typical school night. The officials will use a significance level of α=0.05\alpha = 0.05.

  1. (a) Identify the appropriate significance test by name, and state the null and alternative hypotheses, defining the parameter in context. [3 points]

  2. (b) Justify that the conditions for this test are met. [2 points]

  3. (c) Calculate the test statistic and the p-value. Show the expression you used, with the values substituted. [3 points]

  4. (d) Justify a conclusion in the context of this study, using α=0.05\alpha = 0.05. [2 points]
