Graph

The graph of f(x)=x22−x+2f(x) = \frac{x^2}{2} - x + 2 with a secant line

−11234123456xyf(1, 1.5)(3, 3.5)

1. What is the slope of the secant line shown, through the points of the graph at x=1x = 1 and x=3x = 3?

  1. 11
  2. 22
  3. 12\frac{1}{2}
  4. 76\frac{7}{6}
Show the answer

f(3)−f(1)3−1\frac{f(3) - f(1)}{3 - 1}=3.5−1.52= \frac{3.5 - 1.5}{2}=1= 1.

  • Correct: 11: Change in yy, 2, over change in xx, 2.
  • 22: That is the change in yy alone; divide by the change in xx.
  • 12\frac{1}{2}: That is run over rise, upside down.
  • 76\frac{7}{6}: That is 3.53\frac{3.5}{3}, a height over an input, not a change over a change.

2. The second point of the secant line slides along the graph toward the point at x=1x = 1. What value do the slopes of the secant lines approach?

  1. 00
  2. 11
  3. 1.51.5
  4. They approach no value, because h=0h = 0 gives 00\frac{0}{0}.
Show the answer

The slopes are h2\frac{h}{2}, and limh→0h2=0\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{h}{2} = 0. The graph is at its lowest point at x=1x = 1, where it is momentarily level.

  • Correct: 00: The limit of h2\frac{h}{2} as h→0h \to 0.
  • 11: That is the slope of the drawn secant line, with h=2h = 2; the slopes change as hh shrinks.
  • 1.51.5: That is f(1)f(1), the height of the point, not a rate.
  • They approach no value, because h=0h = 0 gives 00\frac{0}{0}.: 00\frac{0}{0} appears only if you substitute before simplifying; the simplified quotient has a limit.

3. Which expression gives the instantaneous rate of change of ff at x=3x = 3?

  1. limh→0f(3+h)−f(3)h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(3 + h) - f(3)}{h}
  2. limh→0(f(3+h)−f(3))\lim_{h \to 0} \left( f(3 + h) - f(3) \right)
  3. f(3+h)−f(3)h\frac{f(3 + h) - f(3)}{h} with h=0h = 0
  4. limh→0f(3+h)h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(3 + h)}{h}
Show the answer

The instantaneous rate is the limit of average rates on [3,3+h][3, 3 + h] as h→0h \to 0.

  • Correct: limh→0f(3+h)−f(3)h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(3 + h) - f(3)}{h}: The limit of the difference quotient at a=3a = 3.
  • limh→0(f(3+h)−f(3))\lim_{h \to 0} \left( f(3 + h) - f(3) \right): Without dividing by hh this is a change in ff, and its limit is 0 for a continuous ff.
  • f(3+h)−f(3)h\frac{f(3 + h) - f(3)}{h} with h=0h = 0: Setting h=0h = 0 divides by zero; the rate is a limit, not a value at h=0h = 0.
  • limh→0f(3+h)h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(3 + h)}{h}: The numerator must be a change in ff, f(3+h)−f(3)f(3 + h) - f(3), not a single value.

Graph

The graph of f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x} and a tangent line

1234567891234xyf(4, 2)

4. Which limit equals f′(4)f'(4) for f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x}?

  1. limx→4x−2x−4\lim_{x \to 4} \frac{\sqrt{x} - 2}{x - 4}
  2. limx→4(x−2)\lim_{x \to 4} \left( \sqrt{x} - 2 \right)
  3. limx→4xx−4\lim_{x \to 4} \frac{\sqrt{x}}{x - 4}
  4. limh→04+h−24+h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{\sqrt{4 + h} - 2}{4 + h}
Show the answer

With f(4)=2f(4) = 2, the definition limx→4f(x)−f(4)x−4\lim_{x \to 4} \frac{f(x) - f(4)}{x - 4} becomes this limit.

  • Correct: limx→4x−2x−4\lim_{x \to 4} \frac{\sqrt{x} - 2}{x - 4}: The difference quotient in its x→ax \to a form.
  • limx→4(x−2)\lim_{x \to 4} \left( \sqrt{x} - 2 \right): The change in height is not divided by the change in xx; this limit is 0.
  • limx→4xx−4\lim_{x \to 4} \frac{\sqrt{x}}{x - 4}: The numerator needs the change x−2\sqrt{x} - 2, not the height x\sqrt{x}; this limit does not exist.
  • limh→04+h−24+h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{\sqrt{4 + h} - 2}{4 + h}: The denominator must be the change in input, hh, not the input 4+h4 + h.

5. Which is an equation of the line tangent to f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x} at x=4x = 4?

  1. y=2+14(x−4)y = 2 + \frac{1}{4}(x - 4)
  2. y=14+2(x−4)y = \frac{1}{4} + 2(x - 4)
  3. y=2+14(x+4)y = 2 + \frac{1}{4}(x + 4)
  4. y=2+4(x−4)y = 2 + 4(x - 4)
Show the answer

Point (4,2)(4, 2), slope f′(4)=14f'(4) = \frac{1}{4}. At x=0x = 0 it gives y=1y = 1, matching the graph.

  • Correct: y=2+14(x−4)y = 2 + \frac{1}{4}(x - 4): Height f(4)=2f(4) = 2 and slope f′(4)=14f'(4) = \frac{1}{4}.
  • y=14+2(x−4)y = \frac{1}{4} + 2(x - 4): The height and the slope are swapped.
  • y=2+14(x+4)y = 2 + \frac{1}{4}(x + 4): Point-slope form uses x−4x - 4.
  • y=2+4(x−4)y = 2 + 4(x - 4): The slope is 14\frac{1}{4}, not 4; the line in the graph is gentle.

6. You zoom in on the graph of ff closer and closer around the point (4,2)(4, 2). What does the graph look like?

  1. More and more like the tangent line y=2+14(x−4)y = 2 + \frac{1}{4}(x - 4)
  2. More and more curved, like a sharper bend
  3. More and more like the level line y=2y = 2
  4. More and more like the line through the origin and (4,2)(4, 2)
Show the answer

Near the point of tangency the curve and its tangent line become hard to tell apart; that is why the tangent slope is the rate of change at that point.

  • Correct: More and more like the tangent line y=2+14(x−4)y = 2 + \frac{1}{4}(x - 4): The tangent line is the line the graph looks like up close.
  • More and more curved, like a sharper bend: Zooming in straightens a smooth curve; it does not bend it more.
  • More and more like the level line y=2y = 2: The graph rises with slope 14\frac{1}{4} there, so it does not look level.
  • More and more like the line through the origin and (4,2)(4, 2): That line has slope 12\frac{1}{2}; the curve near (4,2)(4, 2) has slope 14\frac{1}{4}.

7. Let f(x)=ex1+x2f(x) = \frac{e^x}{1 + x^2}. Use the numerical derivative on a graphing calculator to find f′(2)f'(2).

Calculator allowed. Give the answer correct to three decimal places.

Show the answer

Calculator: ddx(ex1+x2)|x=2\left.\frac{d}{dx}\left( \frac{e^x}{1 + x^2} \right)\right|_{x=2}≈0.296\approx 0.296 (0.29556...). Write the setup, keep full precision and round to three decimal places only at the end.

  • Answer: 0.296

8. Let f(x)=|x−3|f(x) = |x - 3|. Which is true at x=3x = 3?

  1. ff is continuous but not differentiable.
  2. ff is differentiable, with f′(3)=0f'(3) = 0.
  3. ff is neither continuous nor differentiable.
  4. ff is differentiable, with f′(3)=1f'(3) = 1.
Show the answer

The graph is a V with its point at (3,0)(3, 0): no break, but slope −1-1 on the left and 1 on the right.

  • Correct: ff is continuous but not differentiable.: A corner: continuous, one-sided slopes −1-1 and 1.
  • ff is differentiable, with f′(3)=0f'(3) = 0.: The lowest point is a corner, not a smooth bottom with a level tangent line.
  • ff is neither continuous nor differentiable.: Both sides approach f(3)=0f(3) = 0, so ff is continuous.
  • ff is differentiable, with f′(3)=1f'(3) = 1.: The slope is 1 only to the right of 3.

9. Let f(x)=x5f(x) = x^5. Find f′(−1)f'(-1).

No calculator. Type the exact value (a fraction, π, e or a root is fine).

Show the answer

f′(x)=5x4f'(x) = 5x^4, so f′(−1)=5(−1)4=5f'(-1) = 5(-1)^4 = 5.

  • Answer: 5

10. At what value of xx does the graph of y=x2−6x+4y = x^2 - 6x + 4 have slope 2?

No calculator. Type the exact value (a fraction, π, e or a root is fine).

Show the answer

y′=2x−6=2y' = 2x - 6 = 2, so x=4x = 4.

  • Answer: 4

11. What is the slope of the graph of y=exy = e^x at x=ln⁡3x = \ln 3?

No calculator. Type the exact value (a fraction, π, e or a root is fine).

Show the answer

ddx(ex)=ex\frac{d}{dx}\left( e^x \right) = e^x, and eln⁡3=3e^{\ln 3} = 3.

  • Answer: 3

12. Find the slope of the graph of y=x3exy = x^3 e^x at x=1x = 1.

No calculator. Type the exact value (a fraction, π, e or a root is fine).

Show the answer

y′=3x2ex+x3exy' = 3x^2 e^x + x^3 e^x, so at x=1x = 1: 3e+e=4e3e + e = 4e.

  • Answer: 4e4e ≈ 10.873
