Name: ______________________   Date: ____________   High and low tide at a dock (6 points)

Graph

Depth of water at a dock

The depth of water at the end of a dock changes with the tide. On one day, high tide, with a depth of 3.1 meters, occurs at 2 a.m., and the next low tide, with a depth of 0.7 meters, occurs at 8 a.m. The sinusoidal function WW models the depth of the water, in meters, tt hours after midnight. In this model, high tides are 12 hours apart. The graph of WW for 2≤t≤142 \le t \le 14 is shown with its axes unscaled. The points PP, QQ, RR, SS and TT are on the graph: PP and TT are highest points, RR is a lowest point, and QQ and SS are on the midline.
An unscaled graph of W(t), the depth of water at a dock, for t from 2 to 14 hours after midnight. The graph starts at a high point P, falls through Q to a low point R, rises through S and ends at the next high point T. Q and S are halfway between the high and low depths. The axes have no scale.

  1. (A) Find the coordinates of the points PP, QQ, RR, SS and TT. [2 points]

  2. (B) The function WW is given by W(t)W(t)=acos⁡(b(t+c))+d= a\cos(b(t + c)) + d, where aa, bb, cc and dd are constants. Find values of aa, bb, cc and dd. [2 points]

  3. (C(i)) Is WW increasing or decreasing on the interval (8,11)(8, 11)? Give a reason for your answer in the context of the problem. [1 point]

  4. (C(ii)) Is the rate of change of WW increasing or decreasing on the interval (8,11)(8, 11)? Explain your reasoning. [1 point]
