Nickel plating a bracket

Short free response · 4 points

The question

Name: ______________________   Date: ____________   Nickel plating a bracket (4 points)

Experimental setup

Electroplating with nickel

A steel bracket is coated with 0.500 g of nickel in an electrolytic cell containing NiSO₄(aq). A steady current of 1.75 A is used. Ni²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Ni(s). Molar masses: Ni 58.69 g/mol, Ag 107.87 g/mol. F = 96,485 C/mol e⁻.

  1. (a) Identify whether the bracket is the anode or the cathode, and justify your answer. [1 point]

  2. (b) Calculate the number of moles of electrons needed to deposit the nickel. [1 point]

  3. (c) Calculate the time, in minutes, needed to deposit the nickel. [1 point]

  4. (d) A second cell containing AgNO₃(aq) is connected in series, so the same charge passes through it. Calculate the mass of silver deposited in that cell. [1 point]
