The question

Name: ______________________   Date: ____________   The energy of laser light (4 points)

Experimental setup

A green laser pointer

A green laser pointer emits light with a wavelength of 532 nm. Inside it, an infrared laser at 1064 nm produces the light that is converted to green.

  1. (a) Calculate the frequency of the green light. [1 point]

  2. (b) Calculate the energy of one photon of the green light, in joules. [1 point]

  3. (c) Calculate the energy of one mole of these photons, in kJ/mol. [1 point]

  4. (d) A dye needs 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁹ J to promote an electron to an excited state. A student says the 1064 nm infrared beam will excite the dye if it is made bright enough. Explain why the student is incorrect. [1 point]
