Graph

The curve r=3sin⁡θ+cos⁡(2θ)r = 3\sin\theta + \cos(2\theta)

The curve shown is the graph of the polar equation r=3sin⁡θ+cos⁡(2θ)r = 3\sin\theta + \cos(2\theta) for 0≤θ≤π0 \le \theta \le \pi. It starts at the point (1,0)(1, 0) and ends at (−1,0)(-1, 0). Region RR is bounded by the curve and the xx-axis. A graphing calculator is required, in radian mode.

On a polar grid with circles of radius 1 and 2 and rays every π/6, the curve r = 3 sin θ + cos(2θ) is drawn for θ from 0 to π. It starts at (1, 0) on the positive x-axis, rises in a broad arch to a top a little above y = 2, and comes back down to (−1, 0) on the negative x-axis. The region R between the arch and the x-axis is shaded.

  1. (a) Find the area of region RR. [3 points]

  2. (b) For 0≤θ≤π20 \le \theta \le \frac{\pi}{2}, find the greatest distance from a point on the curve to the yy-axis. Show the work that leads to your answer. [2 points]

  3. (c) Is the point on the curve moving toward the origin or away from the origin as θ\theta increases through θ=5π6\theta = \frac{5\pi}{6}? Give a reason for your answer. [2 points]

  4. (d) Find the slope of the line tangent to the curve at the point where θ=π3\theta = \frac{\pi}{3}. [2 points]
